Alain Bertaud is an urbanist and, since 2012, he has been a senior research scholar at the NYU Marron Institute of Urban Management. He is the author of a book about markets and the practice of urban planning titled “Order Without Design: How Markets Shape Cities” published by MIT Press. Bertaud previously held the position of principal urban planner at the World Bank. Before joining the World Bank, he worked as a resident urban planner in several cities around the world: Bangkok, San Salvador (El Salvador), Port au Prince (Haiti), Sana’a (Yemen), New York, Paris, Tlemcen (Algeria), and Chandigarh (India).

In this two-day-long comprehensive masterclass, Alain Bertaud will delve into critical aspects of urban planning. Over the course of three consecutive sessions, Bertaud will share his expertise on the following three themes: 1.Markets and Urban Planning, 2.Land Use Planning, 3. Housing and Real Estate. Each session is carefully crafted to offer a profound understanding of these vital topics, drawing on Bertaud's extensive global expertise in urban planning and enriched by valuable insights from leading experts such as Bimal Patel, Barjor Mehta, and Vidyadhar Phatak, particularly with a focus on the complexities and nuances of Indian cities.
